Following a spectacular season highlighted by its 28th Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship
and fifth NCAA playoff appearance, the University of Redlands
football team and Head Coach Mike Maynard received additional
accolades for their accomplishments. The San Bernardino County
Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football
Hall of Fame honored Bulldog football as the College Division Team
of the Year and acknowledged Maynard as the College Division Coach
of the Year at its annual Scholar Awards Dinner on May 17 at the
National Orange Show.
During the evening’s celebration, Jeff Clayton, Vice
President of the NFL "Play It Smart" program and Executive Director
of the Historical Black College All-Star Game, and Jeffrey Johnson,
President of the San Bernardino Chapter of the National Football
Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame, presented the team
award to Redlands’ junior running back Tom Romaine
(Ahwatukee, AZ), senior defensive back Conor Drake (Jackson, CA),
and junior quarterback Dan Selway (Villa Park, CA) (shown in
photo).
With an 8-2 overall record and a 5-1 mark in conference, Redlands
advanced to the NCAA Championships for the fifth time in school
history. Furthermore, the Bulldogs gained 14 players on the
All-SCIAC teams, including the Conference Player of the Year in
Selway. Maynard enjoyed his best season since 1992 and improved his
career coaching record to a stellar 121-62.
