TUCSON, AZ – The University of Redlands Baseball team continued with the Tucson Cactus Classic Saturday sweeping Buena Vista (12-8) and Macalester (11-5).

With the two wins the Bulldogs improve to 8-7, 2-4 SCIAC and are now 2-1 on their trip to Arizona.

Game 1 (Buena Vista – W, 11-8)

A combined 19 runs and 29 hits occurred between the two teams in Game 1 of the doubleheader.  BVU tacked on the first run of the game, a two-out walk in the top half of the first.  Redlands though got that run back and then some as first-year Cade McClelland (Mission Viejo, CA) drove in a pair with a two out single up the middle plating both Matthew Brumbaugh (Chula Vista, CA) and Mark Kirkland (Redlands, CA)

After giving the lead up again in the 2nd the Bulldogs were able to string together a couple of strong innings putting up five runs across the 3rd and 4th.  With two outs in the third inning the Maroon and Grey strung together four runs on two hits.  Three walks started it all to Esteban Nakashima (Riverside, CA), Max Clark (Fontana, CA), and Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA).  After that it was Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ) with a double to left that cleared the bases and Jonah Advincula (Santa Clara, CA) would drive him in with a base knock.

The Beavers were able to get those five runs back in the 5th and 6th to make it a one score game at 9-8, but after that it was all Bulldogs bringing across two runs in the bottom half of the sixth.  Brumbaugh started the frame off with a base hit to left and Nakashima moved him over with a double, putting two runners in scoring position.  McClelland then stepped in and singled on the infield bringing in one and Max Smyley (Sarasota, FL) would extend the lead with a sacrifice fly to left.

After a scoreless seventh Redlands tacked on an insurance run in the 8th off the bat of Advincula who tripled in Anderson and that was enough as the UR bullpen would shut down the Beavers.

Cameron Kundig (Redlands, CA) got the start and threw 4.0 Innings giving up five runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.  He left with the no decision.  Jakob Russell (Fontana, CA) came in relief and threw two innings giving up three runs on seven hits as he collected his first win on the season.  Tyler Reiter (San Diego, CA) tossed the final three innings strong picking up his second save on the season.

Anderson had a big game going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three runs batted in.  Nakashima was a perfect 3-for-3, scoring three times, McClelland finished 2-for-4 driving in four and Advincula was 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI's.

Game 2 (Macalester – W, 11-5)

Redlands kept the momentum going in the nightcap rolling past Macalester 11-5, making it two wins in a row.  They got off to a hot start with seven runs across the first two innings.  In the first Advincula started things off with a walk before stealing second and coming in following a Kirkland double to dead center.  Brumbaugh then stepped in and drove a base hit into center plating UR's second run.

The game opened up in the second with the Maroon and Grey scoring five runs on five hits, while capitalizing on a Macalester error.  Clark sparked the inning with a ground-rule double and Anderson followed with his own two baser through the right side.  Advincula then reached on a throwing error by the second baseman and Kirkland drove him in with the second ground-rule double of the inning.  But the frame wasn't done as Nakashima would drive one into center that brought in the fourth run.  He then got into scoring position with a stolen base and would eventually come in thanks to McClelland who would single through the right side.

Macalester got those five runs back with a four spot in the third and another in the fifth to get within two, but that's as close as they would get as UR would add a pair in the sixth and another two insurance runs over the final two innings, which included a solo shot by Clark that helped Redlands complete the sweep.

James Boone (Sammamish, WA) earned his first win on the season going 8.0 Innings strong giving up five runs on nine hits.  He also had a career high 11 strikeouts.

It was a big game for the offense with 14 hits, five of them being for extra bases.  Kirkland was 3-for-5 coming across three times and driving in a pair, Advincula was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, an RBI and two walks, Nakashima was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI, and Clark was 2-for-5 with that homerun, two runs scored and another run batted in.
