REDLANDS, Calif. – Freshman first baseman Cade McClelland (Mission Viejo, CA) had himself the game of his career Saturday afternoon in his first career start lifting the University of Redlands Baseball team to a 13-12 upset win in extra innings over Cal State L.A. at "The Yard."

The Bulldogs bounced back after their 15-5 loss Friday afternoon and showed off their offense with 13 runs on 15 hits led by McClelland who finished 4-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI's.  His last two runs driven in included the game-tying base knock in the 8th Inning and then the eventual game-winner with two outs in the 10th as he propelled the Maroon and Grey to a 2-1 record.

After finding themselves down 7-0 early the Bulldogs found their offense with nine runs across the 2nd and 3rd Innings to go in front 9-7.  They put up a six spot in the 2nd on five hits.  Matthew Brumbaugh (Chula Vista, CA) started the big frame off getting hit by a pitch and came around to score on an Omar Barraza (San Mateo, CA) double to right center.  McClelland then scored Barraza with a base hit to right and that then led to a Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA) single to left, a Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ) single up the middle and a bases clearing double from Esteban Nakashima (Riverside, CA) to dead center. But the inning wasn't done as UR tacked on insurance with Nakashima stealing third before coming in on a wild pitch.

The momentum carried into the 3rd Inning for the Bulldogs as they added another three runs this time sparked by Max Clark (Fontana, CA) who unloaded on a solo shot to deep left that tied the game up.   McClelland kept the inning going beating out a double play ball and that allowed De Vries to connect for another base hit this time with two outs to right field before Anderson brought in both with a double to left field.

Cal State L.A. regained momentum in the 4th bringing across four runs on four hits, three of which were triples as they moved the score to 11-9.  After a scoreless 4th and 5th, the Bulldogs got back on the scoreboard in the 6th with a two-spot that tied the game up.  UR got the bases loaded quickly with Anderson collecting a base hit, Nakshima walking and Jonah Advincula (Santa Clara, CA) getting hit by a pitch.  Max Smyley (Sarasota, FL) then worked a walk bringing in one and Brumbaugh scored another on a sacrifice fly.

In the 8th the Golden Eagles tacked on the go ahead run thanks to Drozdowski who got hit by a pitch before moving over to third thanks to a pair of wild pitches.  He then came in on a double play ball putting CSLA on top 12-11.  But this lead wouldn't hold as Redlands would put together a two out rally in their half.  Smyley led off the inning with a walk and moved up into scoring position thanks to a Clark single to left.  After a pitching change and a couple of outs McClelland came up clutch with a base hit to right field that leveled the game.

After a quick 9th Inning the game then went into extras and that's where the fireworks occurred.  Tyler Reiter (San Diego, CA) went 1-2-3 against the Golden Eagles in the top half of the 10th and that then led to the final at-bats for the Maroon and Grey.  CSLA brought in a new pitcher and that proved costly as Redlands would get after him with three hits.  Clark started the game-winning rally off with a walk and then moved up into scoring position after the pitcher threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt.  Sebastian Mejorado (Oceanside, CA) then came up huge with a pinch-hit single to the left side and Barraza followed with a base knock into left field that loaded the bases.  That then led to McClelland who saw CSLA bring up the center fielder to play up the middle as an extra infielder.  But the first year was able to fight off an inside fastball sending it into the left center field gap bringing in the game winning run.

Nakashima finished 1-for-4 scoring twice, driving in three, stole a base and drew a pair off walks.  Clark was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in, Barraza finished 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI and De Vries added a 2-for-5 effort in his first start scoring twice.

Four pitchers saw the mound today for the U of R with Andrew Rueter (San Diego, CA) starting the game off and going 3.0 Innings and leaving with the no decision.  He was then followed by Cameron Kundig (Redlands, CA), Ryan Rhoades (San Diego, CA) and Reiter.  Reiter picked up the win after going the final 3.0 Innings giving up just one hit and collecting four strikeouts.  He only threw 38 pitches, 24 of which were strikes.

Redlands returns to the diamond next weekend, February 19 when they travel to take on St. Katherine's for a pair of exhibition games beginning at 2:00pm and 5:30pm.  Both games will be played at Escondido High School.
