The University of Redlands baseball team traveled to Eagle Rock on Friday for an afternoon match against the Occidental College Tigers. Behind incredible pitching, the Bulldogs came out on top by a final score of 5-1 in an important Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game.

Junior ace Felix Minjarez (Riverside, CA) took the pearl for the first game against the Tigers. Due to an error and a single in the bottom of the first, the Tigers jumped on the board with an early 1-0 lead. With one out and a runner on first, Minjarez struck out the subsequent batter while junior catcher Rainier Aguilar (San Bernardino, CA) fired a bullet to first base to pick off the runner for the third out.

After the Bulldogs loaded the bases on a walk in the top of the third, senior third basemen Christopher Scalisi (Woodland Hills, CA) stepped up to the plate and sent the ball deep to center field for the sacrifice fly and an RBI.

Aguilar made another heads-up play in the bottom of the third by picking off yet another Occidental runner for the second out. Minjarez struck out the following batter, putting the Maroon and Gray back on offense.

In the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs took advantage of multiple Tiger errors with quality base-running for a three-spot and the 4-1 advantage.

Minjarez continued to cruise through the Oxy lineup by striking out eight in his next five innings of work.

Although the Bulldogs still owned a three-run lead, sophomore shortstop Aaron Singh (Anaheim, CA) blasted a home run over the left-field fence for an insurance run.

Senior hurler John White (Burbank, CA) was called in to close out the bottom of the ninth. He bookended his inning with swinging strikeouts to secure the 5-1 win.

After eight innings and 10 strikeouts, Minjarez improves to 10-1 on the season.

Redlands (21-13, 12-7 SCIAC) faces Occidental in a conference doubleheader at The Yard on Saturday, April 15. Game times are slotted for 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
