Redlands Baseball Boasts Trio of All-SCIAC Honorees

It was announced earlier today that the University of Redlands baseball team landed a trio of student-athletes on the All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) teams that were determined by the head coaches. Senior right-fielder Christian Gurrola (Torrance, CA) was named to the First Team, while junior second baseman Christopher Scalisi (Woodland Hills, CA) hauled in Second-Team laurels. Furthermore, senior third baseman Mark Tumlinson (Anaheim, CA) was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team for the second-consecutive season.

Gurrola earns his first-career All-Conference nod after enjoying a breakout season in his final year of competition. In 27 conference games, Gurrola leads his squad in hits with 41, while posting a .394 batting average, .416 slugging percentage, and a .558 slugging percentage. Of his team-pacing 41 knocks, he punched in nine doubles, a triple, and two jacks. Additionally, he crossed the dish 18 times and registered 104 at-bats. In the field, Gurrola was flawless by posting a perfect fielding percentage that included four assists and 52 putouts. The veteran outfielder was a monster on the offensive front throughout SCIAC play by stringing together 15 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI games, highlighted by a 3-for-4 showing in a win against the University of La Verne that included a home run, three runs scored, and four RBI.

Scalisi adds to his crowded shelf of hardware by hauling in Second-Team honors to mark his third-consecutive All-Conference award in his career in as many years. After making the transition from leadoff hitter to the three-hole in the batting order, Scalisi did not skip a beat. In 27 conference games, Scalisi earned a .343 batting average, .378 on-base percentage, and .448 slugging percentage. He led the team in RBI with 31 while blasting 36 hits – eight coming as two-baggers and one as a round-tripper. Additionally, he scored 20 runs and drew eight walks. Scalisi recorded 13 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games, highlighted by a 4-for-5 showing that included a grand slam and three runs scored against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

As an exemplary leader on and off the field, Tumlinson earns All-Sportsmanship recognition for the second-consecutive season. After serving as a staple at the hot corner for four seasons, he capped off his conference career by earning a .289 batting average, .372 on-base percentage, and a .495 slugging percentage. His slugging numbers improved dramatically this year, as he leads his squad with four homeruns – two of which occurred in a come-from-behind victory against Cal Lutheran. Additionally, he barreled 28 hits and drove in 20 RBI. In the classroom, Tumlinson exemplified what it means to be a scholar-athlete, earning multiple academic awards as a Physics and Mathematics double-major.
