The University of Redlands baseball team continued Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Friday afternoon by taking on the Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Sagehens on the road. Despite striking first on the offensive end, the Bulldogs hit some road blocks in the following innings, ultimately falling to the Sagehens by the final score of 1-11 after seven innings.

Sophomore hurler Felix Minjarez (Riverside) was handed the ball for the opening game of the three-game SCIAC series and proved to be effective early by holding the Sagehens' scoreless through the opening three frames.

The Bulldogs struck first with two outs in the top of the fourth inning after junior first baseman John Keane (Clayton, CA) poked a single to left field. Junior center-fielder Christian Conci (San Mateo, CA) promptly followed by driving a double down the left-field line to plate Keane and grab an early 1-0 advantage.

However, the Bulldog pitching staff began to take a beating, as they allowed 11 runs over the next four innings en route to an 1-11 mercy-rule shortened defeat.

Of the 11 runs allowed, only three runs were earned – some due in part to four batters being hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.

Minjarez (2-1) picked up his first loss of the season after going 5.2 innings and allowing seven runs, with three being earned, and striking out three batters.

Conci went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Keane went 1-for-2 with a run scored, a single, and a walk.

The Bulldogs (5-4, 3-1 SCIAC) look to bounce back on Saturday when they host the Sagehens in doubleheader action at 11 a.m. at The Yard.
