In a back-and-forth contest, the University of Redlands baseball team came out on the losing end of Sunday's showdown with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges by a score of 5-7.  After rallying back to tie it up in the top of the eighth, the Bulldogs saw their comeback efforts fall short when they gave up two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Redlands plated the first run of the game in the top of the first, as senior short stop Chase Tucker (Poway, CA) connected on an RBI-single to score junior designated hitter Marcus Himelhoch (Portland, OR), who ripped off a two-out triple to left-center.

With junior Kyle Hart (Burbank, CA) on the mound, the Bulldogs held the Stags scoreless through two and two-thirds innings. 

After CMS' solo home run in the third, Redlands answered in the fourth by taking advantage of an error, which sent senior infielder Jon Cavender (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) home for the 2-1 lead.

However, Claremont tacked on four more runs to pull ahead, 5-2, by the start of the eighth.  Highlighted by senior outfielder Trenton Lively's (La Verne, CA) long single for two runs, the Bulldogs responded with a three-spot to make it a new ball game at five all.

But CMS took advantage of opportunity with an RBI-single and a Bulldog miscue in the subsequent stanza, leading to the tough loss for the Maroon and Gray.

Hart put together a solid effort in five innings with five strikeouts.  Junior pitcher Eliot Smith (West Linn, OR) surrendered his first loss of the season, going 2.2 innings with one earned run and three hits.

Following Chad Hadzinsky's start, Kyle Shipley gained the win for the Stags in one inning of relief.

Redlands (17-15, 11-12 SCIAC) looks to rebound on Monday when it hosts the first-place Leopards of the University of La Verne in a 3 p.m. SCIAC tilt at the Yard.
