The No. 15 University of Redlands baseball program hosted NAIA opponent University of British Columbia (CAN) in an afternoon exhibition contest on Tuesday. While utilizing a mixture of 16 different players, the Bulldogs fell to the Thunderbirds by a score of 2-8.
On the hill for the U of R, senior pitcher Josh Snyder (Denver, CO) made his first start since March 27, 2010, and tossed two effective innings before running into the heart of the Thunderbirds' lineup.
After UBC scored four in the third, freshman pitcher Kevin MacLachlan (Healdsburg, CA) performed admirably for the Bulldogs by throwing 1.1 hitless innings.
The trio of sophomore Ross Orman (Corvallis, OR) and rookies Peter Shipman (Salt Lake City, UT) and Mark Harris (Tucson, AZ) finished out the game, spreading two earned runs over the final 5.1 innings. Orman rang up four Thunderbirds while Shipman made his Bulldog debut with just one hit. Harris capped off the competition by chucking the last two frames with only one unearned run on two hits.
Despite Redlands' offensive struggles, both senior shortstop Chase Tucker (Poway, CA) and senior first baseman Jon Cavender (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) connected on line-drive doubles.
In addition, Tucker and senior leftfielder Trenton Lively (La Verne, CA) tallied the two RBI for the squad.
UBC's senior starter Danny Britton-Foster (Ladysmith, BC) notched the victory after going seven innings while giving up two runs on four hits.
Junior first baseman Mike Hole (Vancouver, CA) headlined the Thunderbirds' day at the plate by going 3-for-3 with two RBI as well as scoring four runs.
Redlands (3-5, 0-3 SCIAC) returns to conference competition on Friday when the club travels to Claremont for a 2:30 p.m. tilt against the Stags of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
