Competing in the rescheduled single game from Friday, the University of Redlands baseball team dropped a 4-10 decision to the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran University in today's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) make-up contest in Thousand Oaks.
Redlands has now taken two of three in each of its three-game SCIAC series so far.
After three scoreless innings, the Bulldogs recorded the first run of the game in the top half of the fourth inning. With two outs, sophomore third baseman Jason Henning (Redlands, CA) doubled down the left-field line to push across senior right fielder Nate Carlson (Portland, OR), who had singled in the previous at-bat. As of late, Henning has been on tear, hitting .545 in the three games against CLU, including four runs scored, three RBI and a long ball.
Cal Lu immediately posted a run of its own by way of a sacrifice fly to even the game at one apiece after four innings of play.
The Maroon and Gray recovered the lead in the following frame as senior left fielder Brandon Owashi (San Diego, CA) collected his 10th RBI of the season when he brought home junior catcher Landon McMath (Riverside, CA).
Unfortunately, that was the last time that the Bulldogs would hold a lead on the day.
Starting pitcher Paul Dippel (East Granby, CT) suffered a tough fifth inning, giving up five runs to the Kingsmen. In the outing, Dippel went 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on five hits while striking out two.
The Kingsmen later tacked on four more runs to push the score to 10-2 in their favor.
Reserves freshman catcher Joe Bell (Bakersfield, CA) and first baseman Petter Overton-Harris (Beaverton, OR) tried to bring the Bulldogs back in the ninth with an RBI apiece, but the deficit was too much to overcome in the final inning.
Eight different Bulldogs mustered a hit in the loss.
Junior relievers Jeff Cashmer (Cherry Valley, CA), Josh Snyder (Denver, CO) and Trenton Lively (La Verne, CA) played damage control for the Bulldogs, combining for 3.1 innings out of the pen while allowing only one run.
The Bulldogs (7-4, 6-3 SCIAC) return to The Yard on Friday when they battle it out in the first of three games against Occidental College. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
