The University of Redlands baseball team walloped Caltech, 18-0, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game Friday afternoon at The Yard in Redlands.
A throwing error by Caltech's third baseman helped the Bulldogs score four in the first, and the offense would continue to click the rest of the contest, pouring on two runs in the second, eight in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to spell out the final tally.
The game ended after the top of the seventh with the score at 18-0 based on a predetermined agreement.
Junior pitcher Derek Johnson (Canby, OR) earned the start on the hill for the Maroon and Gray and went four innings without allowing any hits, runs or walks. Johnson struck out nine of the 12 batters he faced and received credit for the win. Sophomore pitcher Mike Massari (Palmdale, CA) took over in the fifth and yielded one hit while striking out one, before senior pitcher Jack Winters (Oradell, NJ) finished out the game in the seventh. Winters scattered two hits in his one frame of duty.
Caltech's Brian Penserini accounted for all 18 runs—13 of which were earned—in five innings of work and absorbed the loss. Eric Schropp was handed the ball in the sixth and fanned two batters while holding Redlands scoreless in one inning of action.
Eight different Bulldog hitters reached on a base knock. Sophomore third baseman Cameron Lowe (Olympia, WA) led the attack with a 3-for-4 performance that included two RBI and three runs scored. Lowe also smacked two triples and a double. Graduate student catcher Brett Sandford (Santa Barbara, CA), graduate student first baseman Matt Hughes (Westminster, CA), sophomore designated hitter Ben Saunders (New River, AZ) and senior shortstop Zack Braband (Alameda, CA) each collected two hits on the afternoon to supplement Lowe's offensive output.
Mike Gherini recorded two of Caltech's three hits, going 2-for-3.
Redlands (19-3, 11-2 SCIAC) faces the Beavers again tomorrow afternoon in a conference doubleheader in Pasadena. The first game is scheduled to commence at 11 a.m., with the second contest expected to follow at approximately 2 p.m.
