Head Coach Scott Laverty and Assistant Coach Jason Sobieski of
the University of Redlands baseball team’s coaching staff
helped guide the Cheyenne Grizzlies to the Mountain Collegiate
Baseball League regular season title last week, giving the club the
top seed in the playoffs.
The Grizzlies compiled a 26-16 record and finished the regular
season with a commanding 4.5-game advantage over second-place
Laramie.
“It has been a great summer and a pleasure to work with
players from all over the country,” Laverty said. “I
look forward to the playoff run.”
Laramie and Greeley meet in a one-game playoff, and the winner will
face the Grizzlies in a best-of-three series.
Laverty, the team’s head coach, mentored a number of Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
student-athletes that competed for Cheyenne over the summer. He
coached four from the University of La Verne (Michael Surina,
Jon-Michael Hattabaugh, Aaron Coopman and Donovan Petta) and two
from Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Leo Rosetti and Nickolas
Frederick).
He served as the skipper for the 2009 Redlands baseball program
that boasted a 25-15 record (14-7 SCIAC) and won at least 20
games for the fifth time in as many years.
