In a game where every Redlands starter scored a run, the No. 19 University of Redlands baseball team proved too much to handle for the Rutgers University-Camden Scarlet Raptors, winning 16-7 in its final game of the California Classic in Redlands on Sunday.

Rutgers-Camden donned its home uniforms and acted as the home team while the Bulldogs wore their road jerseys and played as the visitors.

Redlands made its mark early, scoring four runs in the first inning. With two outs and with senior pitcher/infielder Jon Eubanks (Chula Vista, CA) on third, the Bulldogs rallied. Senior outfielder Cory Vane (Simi Valley, CA) singled up the middle, scoring Eubanks. Vane then stole second before advancing to third by means of a senior first baseman Matt Hughes (Westminster, CA) single. Senior outfielder Jordan Snider (Temecula, CA) then singled to right, plating Vane, before senior catcher Brett Sandford (Santa Barbara, CA) blasted a double to left center and drove home both Snider and Hughes.

The Scarlet Raptors then responded with a three-run inning. Greg Hunt doubled to left center and drove in three runs, however, he tried to stretch the bases-clearing hit into a triple and was promptly tagged out by junior shortstop Zack Braband (Alameda, CA).

In the second inning, however, the Maroon and Gray extended the lead to five with four runs on three hits and an error. Braband scored first by means of a botched throw to first in an attempt to throw out sophomore first baseman Manny Cardeiro (San Diego, CA). Vane then drove in senior outfielder/catcher Kyle Rizzo (Redlands, CA) on a sacrifice fly to center in the ensuing at bat. Hughes plated Cardeiro on a single to left center before advancing home on a balk.

Redlands would go on to score five runs in the fourth, two in the seventh and then a final one in the top of the ninth.

Rutgers-Camden battled back with a three-run fifth and showed awareness on the base paths to breathe life back into its cause. The effort proved too little too late as the Scarlet Raptors scored just one additional run in the eighth off of a Scott Fruits single up the middle.

Errors plagued both teams as the Bulldogs committed six while the Scarlet Raptors were charged with five.

Freshman pitcher Brock Jacobo (Yuma, AZ) went five innings and secured the win with two strikeouts to go along with just three surrendered earned runs. With the win, Jacobo moves to 2-0 on the year. The Bulldog bullpen proved effective as freshman pitcher Adam Byrd (Bullhead City, AZ), freshman pitcher Mike Massari (Palmdale, CA) and freshman pitcher Ryan Smith (Milwaukie, OR) combined for four innings, one strikeout and no earned runs.

From the plate, a variety of Redlands batters blasted Rutgers-Camden’s pitching. Eubanks went 4-for-6 with one RBI and a run while Hughes collected three hits, three runs and one RBI in six at bats. Despite only having two hits, senior pitcher Brett Sandford (Santa Barbara, CA) made the most of his plate appearances, batting in four runs.

Additional Bulldogs that had multi-hit outings were Vane, Snider and senior pitcher/infielder Evan Dunn (Portland, OR). Notably, freshman infielder Tyger Pederson (Palo Alto, CA) came off of the bench and saw his first at bat in the ninth, doubling through the right side and eventually scoring a run.

Redlands (12-4, 6-0 SCIAC) finishes out the California Classic at 3-1, winning games against Menlo College, the University of Puget Sound (WA) and Rutgers-Camden while dropping the front end of its doubleheader against Puget Sound.

Head Coach Scott Laverty continues the pursuit of his 200th career victory with a home game against the No. 4 Kean University Cougars at The Yard on Tuesday at 3 p.m. With this afternoon’s win, he moves to 197-185-1 all-time as the program’s head coach.
