The No. 19 University of Redlands baseball team completed its
sweep over No. 20 University of La Verne on Saturday as the
Bulldogs won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC) doubleheader by respective scores of 8-3 and
16-8.
Despite falling in a 0-1 hole in the top of the first, the Maroon
and Gray bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the inning
and did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.
Redlands’ offense ran on all cylinders as senior outfielder
Matt Goldstein (Lincoln, CA) paced the team with an incredible
4-for-5 performance from the plate with two runs, two RBI and a
stolen base.
Three additional Bulldogs supplied multi-hit performances in the
first game. Senior pitcher/infielder Evan Dunn (Portland, OR)
amassed three hits and both scored and batted in a run. Senior
outfielder Corey Vane (Simi Valley, CA) and junior shortstop Zack
Braband (Alameda, CA) notched two hits apiece as Vane scored two
runs while Braband drove in two.
Freshman pitcher Josh Snyder (Englewood, CO) took the hill in the
first game and had a solid outing, giving up two runs while
striking out three in five innings of work.
Sloppy defensive play defined the tone of the second game as
Redlands took advantage of La Verne’s fielding woes and
surged ahead late.
Several Redlands student-athletes had remarkable showings at the
plate.
The game’s most electric play came from a deep home run shot
by sophomore first baseman Manny Cardeiro (San Diego, CA) in the
bottom of the sixth, which traveled well over the centerfield wall.
His stat line, however, caused the greatest damage to the
Leopards’ cause as he batted 4-for-5 with three runs and one
RBI.
Goldstein maintained his high level of play in the second bout,
compiling four hits, two runs and one RBI.
A quarter of the Bulldogs’ runs crossed the plate as a result
of senior outfielder Jordan Snider’s (Temecula, CA) hot bat.
Snider, who also made a phenomenal catch after tracking down a
potential extra-base hit, brought in four runs on three hits.
Other key contributors included Vane, Braband, senior infielder
Tony Stutevoss (Portland, OR) and sophomore outfielder Brandon
Owashi (San Diego, CA).
On the mound, junior pitcher/infielder Michael Lessig (Fountain
Hills, AZ) held down the fort for six innings, surrendering a mere
three earned runs while striking out one.
The Maroon and Gray won Friday’s game against the Leopards by
a 6-2 final in La Verne.
With the series sweep, Redlands further solidified its spot as a
major contender in the SCIAC race, taking down La Verne in all
three games for the first time since 2006.
Head Coach Scott Laverty picked up his 100th career SCIAC victory
with the Bulldogs’ win in the second game.
Redlands (9-3, 6-0 SCIAC) enters a gauntlet of home non-conference
contests over the next few weeks, starting with Menlo College on
Friday. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at The Yard.
