No. 19 Bulldog Baseball Snags Two in Three-Game Weekend Series

The No. 19 University of Redlands baseball team won two of three games against Cal State East Bay in Hayward over the weekend, winning, 12-6, on Friday and splitting the contests on Saturday by finals of 3-4 and 7-4.

Senior pitcher Nolan Nicholson (Fullerton, CA) started Friday’s game and fared well, going six innings while allowing four earned runs and striking out two. With the win, Nicholson improved to 3-0 on the season.

Leading the offense was senior infielder Tony Stutevoss (Portland, OR) and junior catcher Jefre Johnson (Canby, OR). Stutevoss went 3-for-4 and scored a run while Johnson recorded one home run, a triple, two RBI and two runs on two hits.

In addition, senior outfielder Jordan Snider (Temecula, CA) had a multi-hit game, scoring a run while driving in two.

Saturday’s first game featured a more defensive battle between the two teams.

Stutevoss paced the Bulldog offense, going 3-for-5 with a double and a stolen base. Senior outfielder Matt Goldstein (Lincoln, CA) remains on pace to challenge the team’s single-season triple record as he notched his third three-bag knock of the season with a one-out, RBI triple in the top of the eighth.

Despite a respectable outing that included four runs allowed on six hits in six innings of work, freshman pitcher Josh Snyder (Englewood, CO) shouldered the loss for the Maroon and Gray and dropped to 1-1 on the season.

The Redlands bullpen proved unstoppable in the final game of the weekend as a three-man relief team of freshman pitcher Brock Jacobo (Yuma, AZ), senior pitcher Kevin Bissell (Orange, CA) and sophomore pitcher Derek Johnson (Canby, OR) held the Pioneers scoreless through four innings of action. Jacobo, for his 2.1 innings of relief, earned the win.

Goldstein reached base three times on two singles and a double and offered two RBI while scoring a run.

Other multi-hit performances came from senior outfielder/catcher Kyle Rizzo (Redlands, CA) and sophomore first baseman Manny Cardeiro (San Diego, CA). Rizzo went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Cardeiro batted 2-for-4 and plated one run.

Redlands (6-3, 3-0 SCIAC) returns to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play with a three-game series against No. 20 University of La Verne. The Bulldogs travel to La Verne for a 2 p.m. contest on Friday before hosting the Leopards in an 11 a.m. doubleheader at The Yard in Redlands on Saturday.
