Redlands Women's Water Polo Falters against Tough Competition on Day One of Gary Troyer Tournament

The University of Redlands women's water polo team kicked off the 2017 Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament on Friday by taking on Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal Baptist University in non-conference competition at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.  In a difficult first day, the Bulldogs dropped both contests by respective scores of 4-13 and 4-14.

In the opener against the Otters, sophomore center Kolby Kahahawai (Kailua, HI) put Redlands on the board with 7:17 remaining in the first period. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs suffered a significant scoring drought, before sophomore attack player Sami Walker (Taylorsville, UT) fired a goal past the CSUMB goalkeeper at the 1:56-mark of the third frame.  Freshman attack player Oliva Allen (Santa Monica, CA) and junior attack player Alea Weber (Haiku, HI) each tacked on a late score for the Maroon and Gray en route to 4-13 decision.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Grosswendt (Newbury Park, CA) patrolled the Redlands cage by making five saves in the loss.

During the second game, the Bulldogs faced an early deficit and struggled to make up any ground against the CBU Lancers. Allen notched the team's first netter of the game with 3:46 left in the second period.  Kahahawai and Allen each registered a goal in the third quarter, before junior attack player MaryKate Hunter (Redlands, CA) provided Redlands' final netter with 1:18 left in the game.

Grosswendt finished the contest with four saves.

Redlands (1-4) continues the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament on Saturday, March 4, with a 9:15 a.m. contest against Penn State-Behrend.  The Bulldogs also face St. Francis College (NY) at 4:45 p.m.
