Eleven Redlands Women’s Water Polo Players Gain ACWPC All-Academic Honors

It was announced yesterday by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) that 11 members of the University of Redlands women’s water polo team earned All-Academic honors for their success in the classroom.

The ACWPC has three levels of recognition: an “Outstanding” GPA falls between 4.0 and 3.71, a “Superior” GPA lands between 3.7 and 3.41 and an “Excellent” GPA stands between 3.4 and 3.2.

Junior goalkeeper Whitney Schieler (Porterville, CA) led the Bulldogs with her “Outstanding” All-Academic Award due to her cumulative GPA of 3.735. Competing as the primary goalkeeper, she made 322 stops between the pipes, which established a new single-season record at Redlands. She also contributed 41 steals and 15 assists.

Sophomore driver Kelley Cooper (San Antonio, TX), freshman driver Joy Corona (Lake Bluff, IL), senior center Sam Greenawalt (Riverside, CA), senior driver Alex Haynes (Valley Center, CA), junior driver Katelyn LaPine (Laguna Niguel, CA), and sophomore driver Chandler Weeks (Palm Desert, CA) all gained “Superior” recognition.

Cooper boasts a 3.510 GPA as a Global Business major and contributed one goal, three assists, and three steals in her second season with the Bulldogs.

As a Liberal Studies major, Corona holds a 3.615 GPA. This first-year competitor added 12 goals, 24 ejections drawn, 11 steals, and eight assists.

Greenawalt completed her four-year career at Redlands with a 3.537 cumulative GPA as a Communicative Disorders major. During the 2009 season, she notched team-highs in goals (74), assists (29) and field blocks (15) while also recording 30 steals and 35 ejections drawn. Greenawalt finished her collegiate career ranked among the best at Redlands as she lands among the program’s top 10 all-time in goals (255, fourth) and ejections drawn (173, second). Earlier this year, she lauded First-Team All-America honors as well as a spot on the All-SCIAC First Team. Greenawalt’s academic and athletic success also was acknowledged by a spot on the College Sports Information Director (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Second Team.

Haynes provided a well-rounded contribution to the Bulldogs’ season, tallying six goals, 15 assists, 13 steals, and 10 ejections drawn. This English Literature and Government double major completed her college career with a 3.436 GPA.

Majoring in English Literature, LaPine owns a 3.513 GPA. She contributed two goals, three assists and four steals.

With a 3.433 GPA, Weeks gains this academic honor as a Biology major. In only her second season with the Bulldogs, she accumulated the third-most assists on the team with 27 while adding 10 goals, 24 steals, and 10 field blocks.

Sophomore driver Tory Haynes (Valley Center, CA), freshman driver Taylor Johnson (Long Beach, CA), freshman center Jaime Nippert (Gresham, OR) and senior driver Claire Quinn (Fresno, CA) landed among the “Excellent” honorees.

T. Haynes contributed five goals, seven assists, and 12 steals while maintaining a 3.362 GPA as a Liberal Studies major.

Playing in her inaugural season, Johnson made an impact with 12 goals, 12 assists, 10 steals and six ejections drawn. As a Communicative Disorders major, she boasts a cumulative GPA of 3.374.

During the 2008-09 academic year, Nippert tallied a 3.300 GPA while majoring in Liberal Studies. She came up with solid numbers in her rookie campaign, tallying 19 goals, 19 assists, 38 ejections drawn and 37 steals. She also added a team-high 12 field blocks for the Bulldogs.

Quinn rounds out the All-Academic honorees as a four-year contributor with a 3.292 GPA. She ranked second on the team with 59 goals and 28 assists. She also accumulated 46 steals, 20 ejections drawn and three field blocks. At the conclusion of the 2009 season, Quinn was tabbed a Second-Team All-American, following her All-SCIAC Second-Team nod.

In addition, the Bulldog women boasted a team GPA of 3.21, which landed sixth out of 29 teams from various NCAA Division, I, II and III schools.

The Redlands women’s water polo team amassed an overall record of 16-20 to go along with a 5-5 showing in SCIAC action. The Bulldogs also finished second at the 2009 Collegiate III Championships.
