Saudya Reagor and Paige Davidson lead U of R Volleyball against Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – Despite hitting .265 and .250 over the first two sets and seeing a pair of Bulldogs record double digit kills it wasn't enough for the University of Redlands Volleyball team as they fell 25-22, 25-18, 25-21 to Caltech.

The Maroon and Grey have faced some tough competition over the past two weeks and move to 2-6, 0-2 SCIAC.  Caltech on the other side is putting together one of their best seasons in program history improving to 6-3, 1-0 SCIAC.

Saudya Reagor (Banning, CA) led the offense with 11 kills on 29 attempts (.276), she also added eight digs and three block assists.  Paige Davidson (Spanaway, WA) also recorded double digit kills with 10 to go with five digs.  Hannah Miller (Round Rock, TX) led the backrow posting 14 pick-ups, while adding four assists and an ace.  Shelby Dawson (Fontana, CA) led the point dishing out 28 assists, while tallying four kills and four digs.

U of R found it difficult to stop the offensive attack by the Beavers as they hit .330, while totaling 41 assists, 55 digs and 45 kills.  Redlands was forced to play from behind in the first set but was able to stay within striking distance.  Midway through they got within two on six different occasions and was at 23-21 following kills from Reagor and Natalie Starlin (Las Vegas, NV).  They were able to hold off a set point behind a kill from Dawson, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback as CIT would hold on for the opening frame.

Redlands rebounded in the second set taking a 6-5 lead early capitalizing on three CIT errors combined with kills from Reagor and Starlin.  Four unanswered would swing the momentum putting Caltech on top 9-6.  This advantage would hold despite UR getting within three at 18-15 behind an ace by Starlin and a kill from Katie Allbery (Spokane, WA).  But an ensuing 5-1 run by the Beavers would thwart the comeback as they would take the second set 25-18.

UR made one final push in the final stanza tying things up on three different occasions early before taking a lead at 14-13 behind a pair of aces from Maddy Schonauer (Bakersfield, CA).  This sparked a run by the Maroon and Grey with Starlin dishing out a kill and ace followed by a Davidson tally.  This put U of R on top 18-17.  An attacking error by CIT soon after would put Redlands on top 20-19, but it wouldn't hold as Caltech would finish the sweep off with five of the next six points.

Redlands looks to pick up their first SCIAC win next Tuesday, September 28 when they host Occidental College beginning at 7:00pm.
