Volleyball Splits with Providence Christian and Antelope Valley at Redlands Mini-Tournament

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Volleyball team hosted their mini-tournament Saturday dropping a tight four set match with Providence Christian before closing out the tournament with a straight sets win against Uni. of Antelope Valley.

Match 1 (Providence Christian - L, 3-1)

Katie Allbery (Spokane, Wash.) got a kill that gave the Bulldogs a 17-14 lead in the opening set. After that the match became tied on another seven occasions, which included a deadlock at 24-24.  But unfortunately for the Bulldogs the final two points and set went to the Sea Beggars.

The Bulldogs got off to a great start taking a 10-5 lead in the second thanks to Natalie Starlin (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Angelina Hughes (Wildomar, Calif.) who combined for a pair of kills. The Bulldogs' lead grew to seven at 14-7 and despite their lead shrinking to one multiple times, they managed to level the match by pulling out the second frame 25-18 behind a closing 4-0 run.  

Redlands was unable to use their momentum from the second set as they fell behind early before seeing the deficit grow to 20-9. They were able to rally to get within three at 24-21, but couldn't complete the comeback as they dropped the second set.

In the final stanza, UR had an early lead, but again the Sea Beggars were able to weather the storm coming from behind to win 25-14, taking the match.   

Match 2 (Uni. of Antelope Valley - W, 3-0)

In a set that was tied on nine different ocassions, the Bulldogs were able to mount a come back from a 20-18 deficit with a 7-1 run capped off with a service ace from Paige Davidson (Spanaway, Wash.).

In the second, Antelope Valley held a lead midway through and it looked like they would even the match at a set apiece, but the Bulldogs won seven of the next eight points get within two at 17-15. A mini run made it 21-16 Antelope Valley, but the Bulldogs again stayed attached and used a closing 11-4 run to put the Pioneers in a 2-0 hole.  

The third set was much more comprehensive with the Bulldogs taking a 6-5 lead and holding it all the way through the frame as they would pick up the clean sweep along with their second win of the season.  

The Bulldogs return to the court next Saturday, September 18 at 1:00pm against UC Santa Cruz.
