Bulldog Volleyball Battles with CMS on Senior Day

The University of Redlands volleyball team closed out the 2014 season with a competitive showing against the No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Athenas on Halloween in Currier Gym.  After celebrating the four-year career of senior libero Courtney Johnson (Dana Point, CA), the Bulldogs went toe-to-toe against the quality opponents but fell in straight sets, 20-25, 20-25, 11-25.

In the opening set, the Bulldogs battled back and forth with CMS, forcing an early tie at seven apiece off of a kill by freshman middle blocker Kiersten Langerud (Williamsburg, VA).  After the Athenas notched consecutive points, the Maroon and Gray answered right back with a pair of scores, highlighted by a big block by freshman right-side hitter Becky Matthews (Auburn, CA) and Langerud. Redlands continued to trade points until the Athena offense got hot, allowing them to pull away.

During the second stanza, the Bulldogs saw a familiar turn of events, as CMS broke open an early tie at six apiece with solid hitting.  After trailing 7-10, the Maroon and Gray struggled to overcome the deficit and came up short of the late-set rally.

The third set saw the visiting team garner a substantial lead that was too much for the Bulldogs.

Langerud led the Redlands offense with her 10-kill showing, while freshman outside hitter Addison Fonseca (Santa Cruz, CA)) chipped in nine kills.

Sophomore setter Ellie McLeod (Redlands, CA) dished out 25 assists while supplying 15 digs.

With 14 digs and five aces against the Athenas, Johnson finished her career with 869 digs to rank seventh all-time at Redlands while her 94 aces place her in a tie for fifth among the Bulldog record books.

With the loss, Redlands completed a challenging season that resulted in a 3-19 record.
