The University of Redlands volleyball team faced off against fifth-ranked Cal Lutheran University in Currier Gym during Tuesday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match.  Despite coming out on fire in the first set, the Maroon and Gray struggled to overcome the impressive attack of the Regals, resulting in a 22-25, 11-25, 16-25 loss.

During the opening frame, the Bulldogs traded punches with Cal Lutheran and eventually knotted the score at five-all.

Although the Regals pulled away by four points, the Bulldogs rallied to eventually even the count at 13 apiece.

A wall of a block by sophomore middle blocker Marisa Gile (Yucaipa, CA) and freshman setter Ellie McLeod (Redlands, CA) kept the momentum with the Maroon and Gray.  This inspired back-to-back kills by senior outside hitter Morgan Buckner (San Rafael, CA) for a 16-13 lead for Redlands.

After CLU called a timeout to talk things over, the Bulldogs continued to unleash big points, now with senior defensive specialist Brittney Overgaag (Palm Desert, CA) serving tough from the end line.  Three aces by her to go along with another impressive block by Gile and McLeod resulted in a solid 20-13 advantage over the fifth-ranked team in the country.

However, the Regals finally responded after their second timeout, uncorking an 8-1 run to tie it up at 21 each.

With Cal Lutheran now firing on all cylinders, the Bulldogs struggled to counter the impressive attack and eventually fell by a score of 22-25.

Cal Lutheran went on to utilize its depth of 15 players en route to a three-set sweep over Redlands.

Leading the Maroon and Gray, Overgaag provided five aces, while Buckner registered nine kills.

The Bulldogs (5-8, 2-4 SCIAC) look to rebound when they hit the road for a 7:30 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 4, against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
