The No. 28 University of Redlands women's tennis team battled it out with No. 11 Amherst College (MA) on Thursday in a non-conference match on Verdieck Courts. The Bulldogs left it all on the court but came up short of the upset in a 1-8 decision.
After Amherst secured the opening point at the No. 2 slot in doubles, Redlands rallied back with a solid victory at No. 1 by freshman Sarah Ikioka (Wailuku, HI) and sophomore Elizabeth Johnson (Portland, OR). The Bulldogs fought for a positive result at the No. 3 position but ultimately fell in a 9-7 defeat.
In singles, Amherst surged out to clinch the match with wins at Nos. 2, 5, and 3. Despite the outcome, sophomore Madison Ross battled through a difficult 7-5, 7-5 loss, while Ikioka forced her opponent to go the distance in three sets, 6-1, 0-6, 7-6(4).
Redlands (1-7) squares off against No. 14 Sewanee: the University of the South on Saturday, March 18, at 11 a.m. on Verdieck Courts.
