No. 18 Redlands Women's Tennis Cruises to 8-1 Win over Whittier

The No. 18 University of Redlands women's tennis team traveled to Whittier College on Friday for its final dual-match of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) season.  With six, straight-set wins in singles and a pair of doubles victories, the Bulldogs prevailed over the Poets by a solid score of 8-1.

Redlands garnered an early 2-0 lead by winning the first doubles matches off the court.  Junior Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA) and senior Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 2, while senior Maddie Morton (Henderson, NV) and junior Gabriela Vasquez (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) took down their No. 3 foes by a score of 8-2.

Although Whittier grabbed the win at the top slot, the Bulldogs held a 2-1 advantage at the start of the singles.

From here, the Maroon and Gray collected straight-set wins at every position of the line-up, with Pollak, senior Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI), and Vasquez officially securing the Bulldog victory.  Pollak won at No. 6 without dropping a single game, while Sumida dismissed her No. 2 foe, 6-2, 6-1.  In addition, Vasquez prevailed by score of 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 to put this one in the books for the Maroon and Gray.

Furthermore, junior Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA), Villanueva, and sophomore Emily Murnin (Salt Lake City, UT) won their respective matches at Nos. 1, 3, and 4.

Redlands (12-7, 5-3 SCIAC) looks forward to competing in the SCIAC Championship Tournament on Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2, in Eagle Rock.
