No. 22 U of R Women’s Tennis Stumbles to No. 14 Sewanee in Non-Conference Showdown

The No. 22 University of Redlands women's tennis team completed a busy week of competition on Saturday by hosting the No. 14 Sewanee (TN) Tigers in a non-conference match during USTA Campus Kids' Day on Verdieck Courts.  Although the Bulldogs nabbed a 2-1 lead through the doubles, the Tigers came roaring back to win all but one singles match for the 6-3 decision.

Redlands jumped on the board first with a solid 8-5 victory by the No. 1 duo of senior Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) and junior Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA).

However, Sewanee answered right back with an 8-4 showing at the No. 3 slot.

Tied at one apiece, the teams worked to grab the early momentum at No. 2, with the positive outcome going in Redlands' favor as senior Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) and junior Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA) eked out a 9-7 win.

The Tiger quickly evened the count with a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles, before Villanueva stepped up for the Maroon and Gray with her 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 4.

However, the Tigers continued to roll from here, earning wins at all remaining slots.  Etchegaray battled her way into an extended match at No. 1 but ultimately fell by scores of 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Redlands (6-4) returns to action on Tuesday, March 17, when it hosts sixth-ranked Bowdoin College (ME) at 3 p.m. on Verdieck Courts.
