No. 19 Bulldog Women's Tennis Shines in Season-Opener against Bates

The No. 19 University of Redlands women's tennis team embarked upon the 2015 season with today's non-conference match against the Bates College (ME) Bobcats on Verdieck Courts.  After sweeping the doubles, the Maroon and Gray captured the 7-2 win by prevailing in straight sets in four of the six singles matches.

After the No. 3 duo of junior Gabriela Vasquez (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) and senior Maddie Morton (Henderson, NV) put Redlands on the board with an 8-1 showing, junior Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) and senior Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) quickly followed suit with an 8-1 victory of their own.  The sweep was complete with an 8-2 decision by the No. 2 tandem of junior Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA) and senior Julia Pollak (Holland, PA).

In singles, the Bulldogs won the first two matches off the court to secure the overall team victory.  Pollak rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at the No. 6 slot, before Vasquez made quick work of her No. 4 opponent by the same scores.

Etchegaray (6-3, 6-1) and Villanueva (6-2, 6-3) also recorded straight-set wins in singles, resulting in the 7-2 triumph for the Maroon and Gray.

Redlands (1-0) looks forward to 12-straight matches at home over the next month, with its next contest taking place on Friday, February 20, against No. 25 Brandeis University (MA).  First serve is slated for 2 p.m. on Verdieck Courts.
