No. 11 Bulldog Women's Tennis Stunned in Fifth-Place Match of ITA Indoors against Washington (MO)

The 11th-ranked University of Redlands women's tennis team took on No. 12 Washington University (MO) in the fifth-place match of the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championship on Saturday night.  In a difficult finish to the Bulldogs' inaugural appearance at the elite event, the squad suffered a 1-8 loss to the Bears.

Redlands fell behind early after earning only one of the doubles points. The No. 1 tandem of senior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and junior Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) unleashed an impressive 8-2 result for the Bulldogs.

However, the remaining doubles matches went in favor of the Bears, both recording scores of 8-5.

In singles, the Maroon and Gray struggled to get anything going, as five matches finished in straight sets.  Sophomore Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA) provided a bright spot in the scoring, as she forced a third set, which was played as a super-breaker, against her No. 5 foe.

Redlands (3-2) returns home to Southern California on Sunday and looks forward to a regional showdown with 23rd-ranked Trinity University (TX) on Friday at 2 p.m. on Verdieck Courts.
