Bulldog Women's Soccer Rallies for Hard-Fought Draw against Pomona-Pitzer

The University of Redlands women's soccer team traveled to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Wednesday afternoon for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match against the Sagehens. With persistence and heart, the Bulldogs battled back to knot the score and eventually headed home with a 1-1 tie. With the hard-fought point in the standings, the Bulldogs end a five-year drought on the road at Pomona-Pitzer.

Early on, junior midfielder Hayley Romo (Port Orchard, WA) blasted off a shot that forced the Sagehen goalkeeper to come up with the save.  About 10 minutes later, Pomona-Pitzer pressured senior goalkeeper Hannah Menk (Pleasanton, CA) but she answered the call with the necessary stop to keep the home team off the board.

Late in the opening frame, the Sagehens managed to find the back of the net, which forced Redlands to regroup and rally in the second half.  The midfield play of sophomore Mel Johnson (Bremerton, WA), junior Madison Mills (San Ramon, CA), freshman Emily Falla (Woodinville, WA), and sophomore Alexa Glick (Boise, ID) turned the possession around for the Bulldogs and essentially smothered the Sagehen attack.

Redlands earned a barrage of quality looks early in the stanza, beginning with junior defender Louisa Alstot's (Portland, OR) corner kick, which led to Mills' shot that flew wide. Sophomore forward Bryn Anderson (Tahoe City, CA) remained relentless for the Bulldogs and fired off an attempt that required the goalkeeper to corral the ball.

In the 66th minute, sophomore midfielder Hanya Loskutoff (Dublin, CA) played a short cross backward to Falla, who rocketed home the equalizer for the Bulldogs.

The teams traded chances through the final 24 minutes of regulation, with Redlands' best opportunity coming from freshman defender Abby Nordquist (Gig Harbor, WA), who launched a header off of a free kick by Alstot that barely missed as it skimmed the crossbar.

With the score still knotted at one apiece, the game headed into overtime.

Redlands upped the ante on the defensive third, with sophomore Bria Bowton (Spokane, WA), senior Erin Schlosser (Sammamish, WA), Nordquist, and Alstot playing with tenacity and poise. On the other end of the field, junior midfielder Rachel Tungol (San Ramon, CA), Romo, and Anderson worked their way into the flanks in an effort to find the back of the net.

During the second overtime, the excitement continued, as Alstot caught the goalkeeper off her line in the 108th minute and unleashed a shot toward goal but it bounced off the crossbar.

With neither team finding the break-through, the game finished in a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods.

Menk finished with seven saves in 110 minutes of action.

Redlands (7-6-1, 4-6-1 SCIAC) looks forward celebrating Senior Day on Saturday, October 21, with an 11 a.m. match against the Chapman University Panthers on Farquhar Field.
