The University of Redlands women's soccer team traveled to Whittier College to take on the Poets in an important Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match on Wednesday night. Although the Bulldogs turned up the heat in the second half to even the score, their chances for a complete comeback fell short, as the Poets converted a free kick late in the game to break the tie.

The Poets came out firing, notching two early goals against the Maroon and Gray. Redlands tried to respond by taking three great shots immediately after, but none found the back of the net.

Defensively, junior goalkeeper Hannah Menk (Pleasanton, CA) made four big saves to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance.

Following a motivational halftime speech from Head Coach Suzette Soboti, the Bulldogs entered the second stanza pumped up and ready to score. Only two minutes in, freshman midfielder Bryn Anderson (Tahoe City, CA) took those words to heart as she notched the Maroon and Gray's first goal of the game.

In the 69th minute there was a scramble in front of Whittier's goal that resulted in the equlaizer for the Bulldogs on an own goal.

With 20 minutes left to play, both teams knew they had to remain steadfast to pull out the hard-fought win. Although the Bulldogs out-shot the Poets by the slim-margin of 10-9 in the second half, Whittier found the back of the net in the 87th minute on a free-kick opportunity, leaving Redlands with insufficient time to complete the comeback.

Redlands took 17 total shots on the night, with Anderson taking six and sophomore midfielder Lauren Bay (Oak Park, CA) firing off four.

The Bulldogs (3-10-1, 2-8-1 SCIAC) face off against conference rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday, October 22. The game will be played in Claremont at 7 p.m.
