The University of Redlands women's soccer squad traveled to the campus of Whittier College to take on the Poets in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Wednesday night. Despite not scoring in the opening frame, the Bulldogs came out hot in the second half to notch two goals within a matter of four minutes for the 2-1 victory.

There was no lack of opportunities for the Bulldogs early on, as they fired off six shots in the opening 20 minutes of play. Senior forward Jen Franklin (Shoreline, WA) led the charge with two blasts, while senior midfielder Summer Norquist (Boise, ID) and senior midfielder Cassie Lively (Redmond, WA) each notched a shot-on-goal.

Freshman forward Hayley Romo (Port Orchard, WA) hammered off two shots in the half, while Lively and Norquist each added an additional shot, but to no avail.

With the game scoreless to start the second half, the Bulldogs regained offensive form by notching a goal in the 62nd minute, which was tapped in by senior defender Sam Keary (Mission Viejo, CA) after a scrum in the box.

The Maroon and Gray extended its lead in the 66th minute, when Lively lofted up a pass to Romo, who banged in the score with her head for the 2-0 advantage.

Although the Poets notched a goal in the 70th minute, the Bulldogs held on for the 2-1 victory, which moves them into first place in the conference standings.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Menk (Pleasanton, CA) earned the victory after hauling in four saves during a full-game performance.

Franklin, Romo, and Lively teamed up for nine of the Bulldogs' 15 shots in the game.

The defensive brigade of junior Faith Campbell (Bainbridge Island, WA), junior Sammie Burghardt (Gig Harbor, WA), sophomore Erin Schlosser (Sammamish, WA), and Keary held the Poets to eight total shots – four in each half.

The Bulldogs (8-3-2, 7-3-1 SCIAC) look to remain in first place when they face off against the Chapman University Panthers on Saturday, October 24, in a 1 p.m. match on Farquhar Field.
