Bulldog Women’s Soccer Faces Rival Cal Lutheran in SCIAC Postseason Tournament Final

The University of Redlands women's soccer team advanced to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament Championship match after defeating top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, 1-0, on Wednesday night in a semifinal match. With the victory, the Bulldogs travel to Thousand Oaks to play the second-seeded Cal Lutheran University Regals on Saturday in a 3:30 p.m. showdown to determine the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.

Cal Lutheran holds this season's advantage over the Bulldogs, winning both games by one goal.

The Bulldogs earned their spot in the final after completing the upset against CMS in a hard-fought match that featured a single goal from senior forward Lihini Weerasinghe (Redlands, CA). After staying with a ball that ricocheted off the goalkeeper's hands, Weerasinghe promptly buried what ultimately became the game-winning score.

Junior goalkeeper Lexi Felix (Kailua, HI) put together a solid performance, as she recorded the win with four saves. Three out of the four saves came in the second half, which turned out to be crucial plays due to the lack of offensive opportunities presented to the Bulldogs in the final stanza.

A stellar defensive performance aided by junior Sam Keary (Mission Viejo, CA), freshman Erin Schlosser (Sammamish, WA), and freshman Elena Laursen (Seattle, WA) contributed to the scoreless showing by CMS.

Overall, Weerasinghe tops the team with seven goals while junior midfielder Savannah Laursen (Boise, ID) ranks first with seven assists.

In a match-up that featured second-seeded Cal Lutheran and third-seeded Pomona-Pitzer, the Regals prevailed in a 2-1 showing on their home turf on Wednesday evening.

After a scoreless first half, Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute. Just seconds later, the Regals hopped on the board when sophomore forward Katelyn Kimball (Thousand Oaks, CA) converted a shot off of an assist from freshman midfielder Kali Youngdahl (Renton, WA). Cal Lutheran's junior forward Bianca Deardorff (Camarillo, CA) snapped the 1-1 tie in the 82nd minute by netting the game-winning score to propel the Regals into the SCIAC Postseason Tournament final.

Senior goalkeeper Kristin Bailey (Los Angeles, CA) recorded the win along with three saves, one in diving fashion that kept the Sagehens off the board in the first half.

Overall, Youngdahl leads the team with six goals, while nine other players boast two or more netters this season.

Saturday's game in Thousand Oaks will be played at William Roland Stadium. Students and employees with current ID from a SCIAC school as well as children 12 and under will be granted free admission. All others will be charged $5 at the gate.
