U of R Women’s Soccer Takes on CMS in SCIAC Postseason Tournament Semifinal

After edging the Occidental College Tigers in a win-or-go-home scenario on Saturday night, the University of Redlands women's soccer team looks forward to competing in the 2014 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament, which includes the top four teams in a single-elimination, two-day event.

The fourth-seeded Bulldogs square off against the top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Athenas on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Claremont. The other semifinal includes second-seeded Cal Lutheran University battling it out against third-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at 7 p.m. in Thousand Oaks.

The highest remaining seed will host the tournament championship on Saturday at a time to be determined.

Students and employees with current ID from a SCIAC school as well as children 12 and under are granted free admission. All others are $5 at the gate.

Fans unable to attend the CMS-Redlands game may follow along via live stats and live streaming at http://firstteambroadcasting.com/organization/claremont-mudd-scripps-athletics. Due to SCIAC policy, fans will be charged a one-time fee of $5 to watch the stream.

The Redlands women's soccer squad tallied an overall record of 10-6-2 with a 7-5-2 record in conference action. An October surge of 5-3-2 aided a second-half run that pushed the Maroon and Gray into the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. Under the direction of Head Coach Suzette Soboti, the Bulldogs reach their eighth SCIAC Postseason Tournament since the event's inception in 2006.

Redlands and CMS split games with one another during the 2014 campaign, with the Bulldogs grabbing a 3-2 double-overtime victory in the first match-up and CMS earning a 2-0 win in their last meeting.

The Maroon and Gray features many offensive weapons that stretch from the top to the bottom of its roster. Senior forward Lihini Weerasinghe (Redlands, CA) has been a vital piece to the Bulldogs' puzzle, primarily as a boost off the bench with six goals, including two game-winners. Speedy sophomore forward Kate Frame (Fox Island, WA) has acted as a spark plug off the bench, much like Weerasinghe, registering five goals on the year. Junior forward Jen Franklin (Shoreline, WA) and junior midfielder Savannah Laursen (Boise, ID) follow closely behind with four goals each.

Junior defender Sam Keary (Mission Viejo, CA) has set a defensive precedent mixed with a physical mentality that freshman defender Erin Schlosser (Sammamish, WA) and sophomore defender Faith Campbell (Bainbridge Island, WA) have successfully executed.

The dynamic goalkeeper duo of junior Lexi Felix (Kailua, HI) and freshman Hannah Menk (Pleasanton, CA) has garnered 10 wins and an overall save percentage of .741.

CMS earned the top-seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament after tallying an overall record of 13-6-1 and a 10-4 conference record en route to the program's sixth conference championship. Sophomore midfielder Makella Brems (Phoenix, AZ) and junior Darrah Shields (Redwood City, CA) have been the backbone of the Athenas' offense, tallying 15 goals and nine assists between them. Sophomore forward Katelyn Faust (Seattle, WA) and freshman forward Sydney Smith (Sammamish, WA) boast four goals apiece.

Senior goalkeeper Mollie Freed (Seattle, WA) has covered most of the minutes between the pipes, earning nine wins and 48 saves in the process.

The winner of Wednesday's showdown faces the winner of the second semifinal game between Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer. The Regals posted an overall record of 12-5-3 and a 9-3-2 conference record, while the Sagehens posted a 10-5-4 overall record and an 8-2-4 SCIAC mark.

Cal Lutheran heated up at the right time, firing off a 9-0-1 record in the month of October. However, the single blunder came in a 1-1 tie against Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehens have outscored opponents, 9-1, in the past three games, resulting in their current win-streak headed into the semifinal match.

The winner of the 2014 SCIAC Postseason Tournament earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships, which begin with the first and second rounds on November 14-16 at a site to be determined.
