The University of Redlands women's soccer team took on the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Athenas on Saturday in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) showdown on Pritzlaff Field in Claremont. Despite blasting off 16 shots in the contest, the Bulldogs fell to the familiar foes by a score of 0-2.

The Athenas came out firing on their Senior Day and successfully put away an early goal in the seventh minute, forcing the Bulldogs to immediately play catch-up.

The Maroon and Gray quickly responded by orchestrating three shots and two corner-kick opportunities that came from five different players over the next 10 minutes.

The half continued as Redlands tallied a total of nine shots but none of them found the back of the net. During this stanza, junior forward Savannah Laursen (Boise, ID) and junior midfielder Cassie Lively (Redmond, WA) were the main attacking options, as they blasted off two shots each in the first 45 minutes of action.

During the second frame, the Bulldogs settled down to create quality shots that required the Athena goalkeeper to come up with a save on nearly every attempt. Laursen, senior forward Tanya Haggen (Bellingham, WA), sophomore forward Megan Young (Bellevue, WA), and senior forward Lihini Weerasinghe (Redlands, CA) each uncorked on-frame shots.

Late in the game, CMS took advantage of a second-chance opportunity, scoring the insurance goal in the 77th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Lexi Felix (Kailua, HI) played the full 90 minutes between the pipes and hauled in four saves for the Bulldogs.

The Maroon and Gray registered five corner kicks, as compared to CMS' two.

Redlands (8-6-2, 5-5-2 SCIAC) continues SCIAC competition on Wednesday, October 29, when it travels to the University of La Verne for a 7 p.m. contest against the Leopards.
