Seniors Emily Canales and Ricardo Anzar Become CoSIDA Academic All-Americans

Seniors Emily Canales (Redlands, CA) and Ricardo Anzar (Colima, MEX) upped the ante once again by becoming members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Teams for Track & Field and Cross Country. Canales represents the Bulldogs as a member of the First Team, while Anzar lands on the Third Team for NCAA Division III. This honor follows their Academic All-District recognition from late May.

Canales and Anzar bring the Bulldogs' total of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans to four during the 2011-12 academic year. Senior linebacker Brett Hutter (Ontario, CA) and senior swimmer Tyler Harp (San Bernardino, CA) preceded the duo in the fall and winter, respectively.

After transferring to Redlands in 2010, Canales recently completed her degree in Communicative Disorders with a cumulative GPA of 3.981. Her impressive GPA ranked second among the Academic All-America First-Team honorees.

During her two years as a Bulldog, she collected various academic plaudits, including a spot on the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic team for both sports.

Canales' track & field career culminated in a silver medal for her school-record time of 10:36.62 in the 3000m Steeplechase during the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. This USTFCCCA All-American also owns the top mark in Redlands history for her blistering time of 4:37.46 in the 1500m Run, surpassing the previous 35-year-old mark.

Anzar joins the elite company of the CoSIDA Academic All-Americans after being named one of three Fulbright Scholars from the University of Redlands in 2012. A member of the Dean's List, he completed his double major in Spanish and Latin American Studies with a 3.61 cumulative GPA.

This veteran thrower served an instrumental role in the Bulldogs' back-to-back SCIAC championships en route to gaining four All-Conference accolades. He put together 14 top-five finishes combined in the Discus Throw, Hammer Throw and Shot Put during his final campaign.
