For the second consecutive year, sophomore Mackenzie Smith

Smith topped the second flight, launching the javelin 140’
7” to qualify for the final flight of nine with the
second-best mark among those competing in the trial flights. She
then threw the exact same distance in the final flight, which
earned her a third-place finish. Lisa Brown of Gustavus Adolphus
College (MN) paced the field with a stadium record of 158’
0” in the final round while Brandi McNeil, who represented
Wheaton College (IL), improved her trial mark by 15 feet, which
gave her a second-place overall finish.
Last year, Smith placed sixth in the Javelin Throw with a mark of
138’ 8” and garnered All-America accolades.
The top eight finishers in each event are tabbed as
All-Americans.
Hosted by Marietta College (OH), the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track &
Field Championships take place from Thursday through Saturday. With
Smith’s event completed, Redlands track & field puts its
focus on junior Jake Baechle (Aurora, OH) who competes in the
