Bulldog Swimmers Shine at Pomona-Pitzer Relay Meet

The University of Redlands swimming & diving teams kicked off the 2016-17 campaign by competing at the Pomona-Pitzer Relay Meet. The Bulldogs recorded multiple impressive performances in a solid first outing.

For the women, the 4x100 Individual Medley relay of senior Ellie Jaques (Covina, CA), senior Danielle Miller (Hood River, OR), freshman Courtney Gray (Yucaipa, CA), and junior Claire Stuhr (Portland, OR) uncorked a winning time of 4:16.78.

The 300 Fly Relay of Stuhr, Jaques, and freshman Taylor Cadile (San Jose, CA) impressed with another first-place effort that clocked in at 3:06.37.

Finally, the 200 Medley Relay of Miller, Stuhr, Jaques, and junior Emily Waddell (Bellevue, WA) added to the successful day by taking second with a time of 1:53.76.

The Bulldog men also put together quality marks, with the 200 Free Relay of senior Eric Bugna (Vancouver, WA), freshman Michael Talag (Lakewood, CA), sophomore Aaron Bauer (Garden Grove, CA), and senior Will Tyrrell (Portland, OR) touching the wall in second place with a time of 1:28.21.

Bugna also joined forces with freshman Cortlandt Nelsen (Beaverton, OR), junior Brian Wright (Kent, WA), and sophomore Zack Amendola (Palos Heights, IL) for a second-place time of 3:43.00 in the 4x100 IM Relay.

Redlands also recorded a trio of third-place showings in a trio of unique relays for a solid day of competition. Tyrrell, Nelsen, Bugna, and Bauer uncorked a time of 1:38.34 in the 200 Medley Relay, while Wright, Tyrrell, and sophomore Benjamin Fortuin (Aurora, CO) put together a time of 2:48.87 in the 300 Back Relay. Finally, the 300 Fly Relay of Amendola, freshman Matt Skinner (Lakewood, CA), and Talag combined efforts for a time of 2:42.03.

In addition, the Bulldogs mixed it up for a few relays, with the 8x25 Free Relay of Waddell, Bugna, senior Leah Bolin (Oshkosh, WI), Talag, Stuhr, Tyrrell, Gray, and Amendola fired off a winning time of 1:28.57.

UPDATE:  The Redlands divers also competed in Saturday's events at Pomona-Pitzer, earning quality makrs in their first opportunity of the season.  Freshman Jacob Miner (Antioch, CA) and senior Miko Mallari (Palo Alto, CA0 combined efforts for a solid 1-2 punch, with Miner winning both boards (1M-182.15, 3M-220.95) and Mallari taking second (1M-168.85, 3M-183.15).  For the women, senior Jessica Kolsky (Red Wing, MN) recorded a second-place showing on the three-meter board (216.35) and a third-place finish on the one-meter (206.5). Freshmen Sami Scarano (Boulder, CO) and Chloe Cadiz (Paia, HI) added to the team's talent by landong among the top four on the one-meter board in their inaugural meet.  Scarano racked up 215.00 points for second place, while Cadiz earned fourth with 195.65 points.

The Maroon and Gray jumps right into Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Saturday, November 5, when it hosts the Caltech Beavers at 1:30 p.m. in the Thompson Aquatic Center.
