Just hours after clinching its fifth consecutive Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
Championship, the University of Redlands softball team maintained
its momentum by taking two games from Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, 9-4
and 10-3.
In the opener, Redlands initiated the scoring in the first inning
as senior second baseman Dory Baga (Aiea, HI) continued with her
hot hitting by bringing in two runs with a double to left
field.
The Bulldogs scored four more in the third with freshman third
baseman Lindsay Henry (Lake Elsinore, CA) and Baga starting the
rally with singles, followed by a two-RBI hit by freshman right
fielder Breanna Ruelas (Brawley, CA). Next up, senior left fielder
Roxy Lambert (La Jolla, CA) knocked one out of the park for two
runs.
The Maroon and Gray gained another home run from junior catcher
Nicky Neumann (Fremont, CA) as she led off the fourth inning for
the team’s seventh run of the game.
After giving up a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, the
Bulldogs solidified their lead with two runs scored on passed balls
in the top of the sixth.
Despite Pomona-Pitzer’s two-run effort in the bottom of the
sixth and a single score in the seventh, Redlands came away with a
solid 9-4 victory over the Sagehens.
Junior pitcher Olivia Ellis (Colfax, CA) earned her 20th win of the
season, striking out six and allowing eight hits in seven innings
of work.
In game two, Redlands jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the
second inning. Baga and Henry singled to start the inning and then
sophomore third baseman Aleisha Martinez (Escondido, CA) plated one
run off of a hit. Freshman short stop Kai Masutani (Honolulu, HI)
connected on a long single to right field to score two runners but
then was thrown out at second base.
The Bulldogs remained in control with single runs in the third and
fourth innings, including a home run by Lambert to lead off the
fourth.
The Maroon and Gray enjoyed an offensive explosion of four runs in
the fifth, as the team tallied six hits with Lambert continuing her
strong outing with a two-RBI double. Ruelas and sophomore first
baseman Lizett Casillas (Pomona, CA) also plated runs for the
Bulldogs.
The sixth inning included the team’s fourth home run of the
day as Henry knocked one over the fence.
On the mound, junior Amanda Doeppel (Monrovia, CA) notched her
seventh win of the season, scattering nine hits and fanning two
batters.
With the sweep of the Sagehens, the Bulldogs wrap up the regular
season with a record of 27-10 and 20-4 in conference, and look
forward to hosting the SCIAC Postseason Tournament on Friday and
Saturday. As the No. 1 seed, Redlands faces No. 4 Whittier College
at 11:30 a.m., while No. 2 University of La Verne takes on No. 3
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 9 a.m. For additional
