The University of Redlands men's water polo team battled it out with No. 19 Cal Baptist University in Riverside on Friday night but suffered a late-game loss to the Lancers in non-conference action.  Despite an early lead through nearly the midway point of the game, the Bulldogs suffered a fourth-quarter scoring drought that proved to be the difference in the 8-10 decision.

The Lancers jumped out to a 2-0 lead but the Maroon and Gray quickly answered with four-consecutive goals to close out the opening frame.  Freshman driver Aki Andersen (Laguna Beach, CA) initiated the comeback, while freshman center Billy Clifford (Redlands, CA), sophomore driver Kevin Chapa (Carlsbad, CA), and sophomore center Matt Shippen (Santa Maria, CA) also found the back of the net for Redlands.

The Bulldogs expanded their advantage to 5-2 less than two minutes into the second frame, thanks to another Chapa score.

However, CBU began to chip away at the deficit, eventually tying it up at six apiece with 1:39 left in the first half.

The teams traded scores throughout the third stanza, knotting the tally at seven apiece and then at eight all.  Shippen and junior center-defender Mark Zikov (La Quinta, CA) provided instrumental netters for the Maroon and Gray during this quarter.

But the Lancers managed to break the 8-8 tally with back-to-back goals, while Redlands remained scoreless during the final frame, leading to the two-score loss.

Overall, Shippen, Chapa, and Clifford each tallied two goals for the Bulldogs, while junior goalkeeper Chris Sekula (LaGrange, IL) racked up 11 saves in a complete-game effort.

Redlands (13-13, 4-2 SCIAC) heads to the University of La Verne on Wednesday, November 11, for a 4 p.m. showdown against the Leopards in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action.
