Bulldog Men’s Tennis stuns Boston College and Pepperdine at Pacific Coast Doubles Championships

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Tennis team competed in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships in La Jolla over the weekend picking up a pair of upsets against teams from Division I Boston College, Pepperdine University and UC Santa Barbara.

Head Coach Pete Yellico brought eight players broken up into four teams.  Stefan Hester (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) and Jack Mattox (Mercer Island, WA) were put together and had a great run early collecting a Round of 128 victory over Mason Fung and Jake Vassel from Division I Boston College winning 1-4, 4-1, 8-6.  They then advanced to the Round of 64 where they ran into the No. 17 seed Gianluca Brunkow and Lucca Liu from Division I UC Santa Barbara.  Hester and Mattox went the distance nearly pulling off another upset falling 4-1, 4-5 (6), 7-4.

Bryce Keim (Spartanburg, SC) and Nils Plutat (Sauerlach, Bavaria, Germany) also had a strong run for the Maroon and Grey picking up an upset win in the Round of 128 beating Robert Shelton (Pepperdine University) and Pierre Boullenger (UC Santa Barbara), both Division I players taking it in a third set 4-1, 1-4, 7-5.  The next round they then had to take on the No. 4 seed in Yuta Kkuchi and Lucas Magnaudet from Division I Cal Berkeley and despite a straight sets loss picked up three games, falling 4-0, 5-3.

First-years Luca Davidorf (Atlanta, GA) and Josh Davydov (Bellevue, WA) were teamed up together and they opened with a match-up against Broc Fletcher and Sajin Smith from Ball State University falling 4-2, 4-2.  They then entered the consolation draw where they took on the No. 9 seed Ryan Colby (USC) and Karl Lee (UCLA).  The Bulldogs gave them all they could handle forcing the match to a third set, ultimately falling 4-2, 1-4, 7-5.

The last duo to play together was Donovan Lilov (San Diego, CA) and Omar Khayat (Irvine, CA) who had a deep run in the Championships.  They opened up play in the Round of 128 against the No. 9 seed Nishesh Basavareddy and Aryan Chaudhary from Stanford University falling in straight sets 4-1, 4-1.  They then went to the consolation draw where they took out Peter Georges and Tyler Luke, a couple of high school players from San Diego winning 5-3, 4-2.  After a walkover in the Round of 32 against Maz Palmer and Aidan McNulty from Boston College, Lilov and Khayat then faced off against Bjorn Hoffman (UC Irvine) and Paul Barretto (USC) in the Round of 16 dropping in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.        

Redlands returns to their dual schedule this Wednesday, March 8 when they host Vassar College beginning at 5:00pm.
