Bulldog Men Make Early Exit from NCAA Tennis Individual Championships

It was a rough day on the courts for the three first-time qualifiers of the No. 15 University of Redlands men's tennis team, as the trio made an early exit from the NCAA Division III Individual Championships with first-round losses.

While making his national collegiate debut in just his rookie season, freshman Chase Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) battled through three sets in the opening match of the day at Kalamazoo College (MI).  Lipscomb got off to a solid start in a high-quality match against Eric Spangler, the top player from Salisbury College (MD), but struggled to close it out and fell by scores of 5-7, 6-0, 6-4.

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Rookie of the Year completes an impressive first campaign at Redlands with a 24-5 singles record.

During the afternoon, junior Jake Ly (Torrance, CA) and sophomore Joey Dulle (St. Louis, MO) also made their first NCAA appearances when they squared off against Palmer Campbell and Hamid Derbani, the No. 1 duo from Middlebury College (VT).  After the Bulldogs raced out to a one-set lead, their relentless opponents rallied back to snag the victory in a three-set showing, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The dynamic duo finishes out a solid season with a 16-7 mark, which included seven wins in its final eight matches of the season.
