The No. 19 University of Redlands men's soccer team took the trip to Pasadena to take on the Beavers of Caltech in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match-up. While utilizing nearly every available player, the Bulldogs found the back of the net seven times from just four players to take home the shutout victory.
Senior midfielder Casey ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) kicked off the scoring spree in the fourth minute, as he took the ball to goal himself for the 1-0 Bulldog advantage.
Caltech had a look towards goal in the 10th minute, forcing senior goalkeeper Josh Haskill (Lakewood, CA) to make the save. Thanks to the strong Redlands defense of senior Ben Thompson (Spokane, WA), junior Joey Kenney (Portland, OR), and sophomores Matias Lazo-Fanning (Seattle, WA) and Dylan Carlyle (San Jose, CA), this would be the only stop Haskill would have to make in the entire game.
Redlands' offense continued to press, as freshman midfielder Collin ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) found the back of the net in the 26th minute for his first goal of his young Bulldog career. Just three minutes later, senior forward Cameron Doody (Arvada, CO) rocketed one through the posts for a 3-0 Bulldog lead.
However, neither Collin ChubbFertal nor Doody was done, as Doody notched another and Collin ChubbFertal incredibly completed the hat-trick with two more. By the 74th minute, the Bulldogs held a 6-0 advantage.
With fresh feet in the game for Redlands, the level of play remained extremely high and resulted in quality corner kicks and great opportunities on goal.
After a foul in the box in the 79th minute, the visiting team was awarded a penalty kick. Freshman forward Nick Susac (Los Angeles, CA) slotted one past the goalkeeper for his first goal in a Bulldog uniform.
In addition, sophomore goalkeepers Noah Natividad (San Diego, CA) and Emilio Raby-Newsom (Chicago, IL) gained quality minutes between the pipes and helped preserve the shutout.
The Bulldogs (9-3, 8-0 SCIAC) take to the road on Saturday, October 7, for a conference game against the University of La Verne at 7 p.m.
