No. 15 Redlands Men's Soccer Loses Late to La Verne in Tale of Two Halves

The No. 15 University of Redlands men's soccer team faced the University of La Verne Leopards in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) showdown under the lights of Farquhar Field on Friday. Although Redlands scored twice in the first half, La Verne refused to go away and clawed its way back to eventually hand the home team a difficult 2-3 loss.

The Bulldogs got off to a great start by playing tough and moving the ball. Their efforts came to fruition in the 15th minute as junior midfielder Casey ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) blasted a beautiful shot from 35 yards out that went sailing over the La Verne goalkeeper's head.

Minutes later, junior midfielder Sergio Valencia (San Jose, CA) placed a great corner kick that found the head of ChubbFertal for a shot but was saved. Next, it was junior midfielder Cameron Doody's (Arvada, CO) turn to take the corner. Junior defender Ben Thompson (Spokane, WA) took a touch to the foot of junior forward Chase Boone (Beaverton, OR), who netted the Bulldogs' second goal of the night.

With a 2-0 lead, the Bulldogs appeared primed for a solid second half.  But La Verne remained relentless and rallied to pressure the home team with multiple chances.  The Leopards' persistence paid off with three goals in the final 30 minutes of the game.

Although Boone and ChubbFertal took one more shot each in the final five minutes, none were successful, leaving Redlands down a score at the end of regulation.

The Bulldogs (13-5, 11-4 SCIAC) look to immediately bounce back, as they take on the Occidental College Tigers on Senior Night on Saturday, October 29.  The festivities begin at 7 p.m.
