The No. 14/19 University of Redlands men's soccer team faced off against the Panthers of Chapman University in a hard-fought Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic (SCIAC) match on Monday night under the lights at Farquhar Field. Amidst a tightly-contested battle, the Bulldogs came out on top by a score of 1-0, as sophomore defender Spencer Scott (Beaverton, OR) recorded the first goal of his Redlands career.

Chapman came out ready to play, firing off two shots in the first three minutes of the game.  But thanks to the defensive unit of senior Austin Moore (Las Vegas, NV), juniors Keoni Yates (Kailua-Kona, HI) and Ben Thompson (Spokane, WA), and Scott, both shots were blocked.

About 10 minutes later, Redlands successfully worked the ball down to Chapman's defensive third for an excellent scoring opportunity. Junior midfielder Casey ChubbFertal's (Eugene, OR) massive throw-in landed near the front of the goal and found the foot of Scott, who blasted it into the back of the net for his first-ever goal as a Bulldog.

However, the Panthers refused to go away, as they registered seven shots in the second frame and forced Redlands' junior goalkeeper John Melito (Keller, TX) to serve as a brick wall by coming up with three huge saves.

The teams continued to compete in an evenly-matched, physical game, with each earning five corner kicks by the final whistle.  But the Maroon and Gray's sole goal was just enough to secure its sixth conference victory of the season.

Overall, Redlands outshot the visitors by a slight 14-13 margin, with ChubbFertal pacing the Bulldogs with four attempts, including two on goal.

With this win, Melito records his second shutout of the season in his second start.

The Bulldogs (8-2-0, 6-1-0 SCIAC) look forward to hosting conference foe Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday, October 1, at 1 p.m. on Farquhar Field.
