No. 14/19 Bulldog Men's Soccer Edges La Verne in Important SCIAC Match

The No. 14/19 University of Redlands men's soccer team took to the road for an important Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) showdown against the University of La Verne Leopards on Wednesday night.  Amidst a defensive and physical battle, the Bulldogs prevailed in a 1-0 decision to hand La Verne its first loss of the season.

Redlands came out on fire by creating an immediate opportunity with a corner kick just 3:01 into the game.  A few minutes later, junior forward Chase Boone (Beaverton, OR) unleashed the first shot of the game, which forced the Leopard goalkeeper to make a save.

The momentum slightly shifted in La Verne's favor, as the home team mustered a barrage of scoring chances over the next 20 minutes. But the Bulldogs' defensive unit of sophomore Spencer Scott (Beaverton, OR), junior Ben Thompson (Spokane, WA), and freshmen Rudy Frayre (Santa Monica, CA) and Toshi Kosins (Tokyo, Japan) provided great support to junior goalkeeper John Melito (Keller, TX) in his first start of the season.

In the 23rd minute, Boone recorded the Maroon and Gray's second shot of the game but the goalie came up with the save.

Following a ULV foul in the box, junior forward Alexander Knox (Seattle, WA) converted his second penalty kick in as many games to put Redlands on the board in the 31st minute.

With a 1-0 lead, the Bulldogs continued to press, earning four more shots through the final whistle.  Sophomore forward Kayvon Parsa (West Hills, CA) led the Redlands offense by uncorking two shots on goal in the second half.

However, the Maroon and Gray's defense was tested against the six ULV corner kicks during the second stanza.  But Melito and company took care of business with tenacity and poise from the back line and successfully held the then-undefeated Leopards scoreless through 90 minutes.

Overall, the Maroon and Gray tallied seven total shots, all of which were between the posts.

Redlands (7-2, 5-1 SCIAC) looks forward to hosting Chapman University on Monday, September 26, at 7 p.m. on Farquhar Field.
