No. 21/19 Redlands Men's Soccer Sails past Cal Lutheran in 3-0 SCIAC Win

The No 21/19 University of Redlands men's soccer team traveled to Thousand Oaks on Saturday night for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) showdown against Cal Lutheran University. After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs made the necessary adjustments to cruise to a 3-0 victory over the Kingsmen.

The Bulldogs quickly jumped on the offensive, as junior forward Chase Boone (Beaverton, OR) fired off a header-shot only 37 seconds into the first frame. Amidst a physical battle, the Maroon and Gray registered four more shots during the first half but to no avail. The Redlands defensive unit of senior Austin Moore (Las Vegas, NV), juniors Ben Thompson (Spokane, WA) and Keoni Yates (Kailua-Kona, HI), and sophomore Spencer Scott (Beaverton, OR) held a strong back line to keep the Kingsmen off the scoreboard.

During the intermission, Head Coach Ralph Perez offered an inspirational speech that left the Bulldogs hungry for goals in the second stanza.

The team came out ready for action and immediately upped the intensity by registering the first goal of the game in the 49th minute. Boone dished out an impressive assist to junior midfielder Casey ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR), who nailed it into the top-right corner of the net.

After 10 more minutes of aggressive play, Redlands looked to sophomore forward Kayvon Parsa (West Hills, CA) to find the back of the net for his second goal of the 2016 season.

Leading by a score of 2-0, the Bulldogs kept on the gas pedal by unleashing nine total shots during the final stanza. Boone led the effort, with his fifth and final attempt flying past the diving Kingsmen goalie.

Just minutes later, Cal Lutheran was awarded a penalty kick, but junior goalkeeper Josh Haskill (Lakewood, CA) reeled in an amazing save to preserve the Maroon and Gray's shutout. He finished with three saves overall.

Redlands tallied 14 total shots, as compared to CLU's 12, and impressed with six corner-kick opportunities on the night.

The Bulldogs (4-0-0, 2-0-0 SCIAC) look forward to a busy week of competition, beginning with the Stags of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Wednesday, September 14, on Farquhar Field. This important SCIAC showdown is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
