The University of Redlands men's soccer team took to the pitch on a drizzly Monday night to face off against the Caltech Beavers in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action. While utilizing 25 players, the Bulldogs transformed into a well-oiled machine on both sides of the ball, as they opened the floodgates for nine goals in a 9-1 tromping of the Beavers.
The Bulldogs wasted no time jumping on the board, as sophomore defender Keoni Yates (Kailua-Kona, HI) netted the opening score with a little help from sophomore midfielder Casey ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) in the fourth minute of action.
Moments later, sophomore midfielder Chase Boone (Portland, OR) expanded the Bulldogs' lead by notching a goal off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Sergio Valencia (San Jose, CA).
Just four minutes later, freshman forward Kayvon Parsa (West Hills, CA) departed on a solo mission for another Redlands goal, as he fired home a netter in the 24th minute of action.
From here on, junior forward Ryan Davis (Seattle, WA) took the reins of the Bulldogs' offensive engine by notching five goals – a hat trick coming at the end of the first half during a three-minute span and then two goals within a minute of each other in the second half. With his five goals, Davis ties the single-season Redlands men's soccer record for most individual goals in a game (5) and most individual points in a game (10). Both records have stood since 1995.
After Caltech pulled one back, Redlands' sophomore forward Kamal Bilal (Chicago, IL) joined the scoring spree with his first career-goal in the final minute when he one-touched a Parsa pass to send it up and over the Beaver goalkeeper.
The Maroon and Gray held the Beavers to five shots, due to the flawless effort of multiple defenders, including senior Peter Marsden (Woodside, CA), sophomore Colin Zaccagnio (Phoenix, AZ), freshman Joseph Kenney (Portland, OR), freshman Spencer Scott (Portland, OR), sophomore Ben Thompson (Spokane, WA), and Yates. In addition, junior midfielder Austin Moore (Las Vegas, NV) returned from injury and made a solid impact on the game as well.
Overall, the Bulldogs hammered off 34 shots and tallied four corner kicks.
After 45 minutes between the posts, sophomore goalkeeper Josh Haskill (Lakewood, CA) earned his third-consecutive victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Dylan Ochoa (Santa Monica, CA) capped off the contest and recorded one save.
With the win, the Bulldogs (8-2-2, 6-2-1 SCIAC) slide into first place in the conference standings. They continue SCIAC action on Saturday, October 10, by squaring off against the Chapman University Panthers at 7 p.m. on Farquhar Field.
