The University of Redlands men's soccer team traveled to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges for Saturday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) showdown and captured an important 1-0 victory over the Stags.

Amidst a defensive and physical battle that resulted in only six shots for each team, the Bulldogs orchestrated the break-through goal early in the second half.  Following a corner kick by senior forward Charles Izydorek (Redlands, CA), the ball bounced around before finding sophomore defender Tom Elsea (Mission Viejo, CA), who took advantage of open space at the top of the box by finding the back of the net on a half-volley in the 50th minute.

Moments after Elsea's netter, Redlands gained a quality shot by Izydorek but the blast bounced off the crossbar.

Less than 15 minutes later, senior forward Matej Kustura (Las Vegas, NV) and freshman midfielder Sergio Valencia (San Jose, CA) continued to pressure the Stag goalkeeper by firing off shots between the pipes.

After making three saves in the first half, freshman goalkeeper Josh Haskill (Lakewood, CA) was not forced to make a stop in the final 45 minutes en route to the shutout win.

Throughout the contest, the teams remained true to their historical and familiar rivalry, providing a physical battle that resulted in 36 total fouls, including 21 for CMS.

Redlands (6-6, 5-3 SCIAC) returns home to the friendly confines of Farquhar Field for its next two SCIAC games, beginning with Wednesday's 7 p.m. match against Occidental College.
