The University of Redlands men's soccer program pulled off a 3-0 upset against the 24th-ranked Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz on Sunday evening at Farquhar Field. The Bulldogs came out firing away en route to a 2-0 lead at halftime, and then iced the game in the waning minutes to complete the team's second consecutive hat-trick performance.

Senior captain defender Danny Day (Beaverton, OR) set the tone for the Maroon and Gray by punching in a header in the 25th minute of action. He connected on junior midfielder Gabe Ramirez's (Pasadena, CA) corner kick for the Bulldogs' inaugural score.

Less than 11 minutes later, Redlands attacked once again as rookie midfielder Matej Kustura (Las Vegas, NV) found the back of the net after a jumble in front of the Santa Cruz goal.

At halftime, Redlands looked to have full control and momentum of the contest, out-shooting UC Santa Cruz, 15-4, and owning the corner-kick advantage by a 4-2 margin.

However, the Banana Slugs refused to go down without a fight, competing stride for stride with the Bulldogs in the second half.

But junior defender Nick Eary (Las Vegas, NV) put the game away for the Maroon and Gray at the 87:55-mark, registering his fourth netter in 2011. Sophomore midfielder Pat Roraff (Redlands, CA) assisted Eary on the goal to give Roraff a four-game point streak.

Sophomore goalkeeper Andreas Silva (San Jose, CA) looked poised and steady as the last line of defense for Redlands. He stopped all six shots-on-goal for his third shutout victory of the season.

Redlands (6-3-0, 3-0-0 SCIAC) travels to Pasadena on Wed., Sept. 28, for a 4 p.m. showdown against the Beavers of Caltech.
