Bulldog Men’s Soccer Buries Beavers in Conference Home Opener

The University of Redlands men's soccer team won its third consecutive conference game on Wednesday evening, defeating the Beavers of Caltech by a score of 7-0 on Farquhar Field. The Bulldogs have won their last four matches and currently claim the top spot in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings.

Senior midfielder Ethan Low (Langley, WA) and junior forward Jamie Griffin (Seattle, WA) initiated the scoring for the Bulldogs only three minutes into the ball game. They connected on a nice give-and-go move to notch Low's second goal of the season.

A few minutes later, senior midfielder Gilbert Flores (Woodlake, CA) took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity against the Beavers' goalkeeper and netted his third score of the year, giving Redlands a 2-0 lead.

Junior forward Cody Carlson (Burbank, CA) added some excitement right before the end of the first half by weaving through several defenders to score the Bulldogs' third goal of the game.

The first score of the second frame came from freshman defender Richie Marquez (Pomona, CA) when he pounded a shot off of senior defender Danny Connors' (Lake Oswego, OR) corner kick. This was Marquez's initial goal of his young collegiate career.

Griffin recorded a multi-point game when he found the back of the net during the 68th minute for his first goal of the season.

Redlands kept the pressure on as freshman midfielder Tim Berggren (Salt Lake City, UT) dished out his second Bulldog point with an assist to Carlson, who crushed the ball to the top corner, making it a 6-0 game with less than 18 minutes remaining.

Freshman midfielder Will Walker (Folsom, CA) joined the offensive explosion as he recorded his first Bulldog goal when he connected with Berggren's second assist of the night.

Three goalkeepers entered the match for Redlands as freshman Andreas Silva (San Jose, CA) picked up the victory. Juniors Jason Smuckler (Woodland Hills, CA) and Charles Pratt IV (Phoenix, AZ) also contributed to the team's first shutout of the 2010 campaign.

The Bulldogs look forward to hosting conference rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday with a 1 p.m. kickoff.
