Junior midfielder John Brookover (Boise, ID) accounted for the
first two scores of the match as the University of Redlands
men’s soccer team downed Occidental College, 3-0, on
Wednesday afternoon in Eagle Rock.
Brookover opened scoring in the 30th minute when he battled through
a scrum in the box. At the 62-minute mark, his former University of
Portland (OR) teammate, junior defender Danny Connors (Lake Oswego,
OR), played in a ball off of a corner that Brookover weaved into a
goal.
Finally, freshman forward Alex Laughton (Pleasanton, CA) found the
feet of freshman midfielder Gabe Ramirez (La Crescenta, CA) in the
77th minute, and Ramirez's shot went past the goal line on the
far post.
Although the Bulldogs won in dominating fashion, the Tigers held
the upper hand in shots, 13-11. In spite of the shot margin, the
Maroon and Gray maintained a sizable advantage over the Tigers in
corner kicks, 8-3.
Senior goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego, CA) held the Tigers
scoreless in between the pipes for the Bulldogs, turning away six
shots. Occidental’s Andrew Larkin gave up three goals while
making two saves.
The Tigers (4-8, 3-6 SCIAC) continue their second round of Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play when
they square off against Cal Lutheran University on Saturday at 11
a.m. in Eagle Rock.
Redlands (6-6-2, 5-3-1 SCIAC) looks to go above the .500 mark for
the first time this season when it hosts Caltech on Saturday. Game
time is set for 11 a.m. In the initial meeting between the two
teams on Sept. 23 in Pasadena, the Bulldogs ran away with a 7-1
triumph.
