Hobson Posts Shutout as Bulldog Men’s Soccer Rolls Past Kingsmen, 2-0

University of Redlands senior goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego, CA) notched five saves as the Bulldog men’s soccer team blanked Cal Lutheran University, 2-0, on Wednesday in Redlands.

At the half, Redlands held a 13-6 advantage in shots, yet the shot-on-goal margin remained knotted at two apiece. Cal Lutheran Head Coach Dan Kuntz removed Chris Capellini at the intermission to give way for Chris Holm in between the pipes.

Freshman forward Alex Laughton (Pleasanton, CA) opened scoring in the 50th minute when he took advantage of a rebound. He possessed the ball on the left wing and uncorked a shot directly at Holm. Holm deflected the powerful attempt, which landed back at Laughton’s feet. Laughton then buried the come-backer into the back of the net to put the Bulldogs up, 1-0.

Karma came around for the team’s go-to distributor this season, senior forward Nick Gundersen (Park City, UT), in the 73rd minute as he took advantage of Holm’s botched attempt to stop a through ball from senior midfielder Will Kelly (Seattle, WA). Gundersen converted the pass for his first goal of the season, giving Redlands a commanding 2-0 lead.

From that point forward, the Kingsmen received few quality shot opportunities, and the Maroon and Gray finished out the match with its first shutout triumph of the season.

Hobson stopped five shots protecting the Bulldog net and earned his fourth victory of the season. Holm was charged with the loss for Cal Lutheran while Capellini received no goalkeeping decision despite holding the Maroon and Gray scoreless in the first stanza.

Redlands (4-5-1, 3-2 SCIAC) faces a crucial Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) contest on Saturday when it travels to Claremont to take on Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
