Good takes over for recently retired Coach Mike Maynard, who led the Bulldogs for 33 years

Bulldog Athletics embarks upon a new era that officially began on July 1, 2021, with Jim Good moving into the role of Interim Head Football Coach at the University of Redlands.  On June 30, Mike Maynard stepped away from the sidelines of Bulldog football for the first time since 1988 and now begins his retirement.

"We are fortunate to be able to transition the Bulldog football leadership with minimal disruption to student-athletes, coaches, and the football community, which is a testament to Coach Maynard's leadership, mentorship, and the legacy he leaves behind following his outstanding 33-year career as Head Football Coach at the University of Redlands," stated Director of Athletics Jeff Martinez.

Good had served as the Associate Head Coach since 2012 while maintaining his responsibilities of Offensive Coordinator, Quarterbacks Coach, and Recruiting Coordinator, which began the previous year.  Since his arrival, the Bulldogs have won three Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) championships, finished second five times, and advanced to the NCAA Championships on four occasions.  Among the team's many accolades, Redlands has produced six quarterbacks, six running backs, and eight wide receivers who have garnered All-SCIAC selections with Good's oversight of the offense.

In 2019, the Bulldogs reset their own scoring record with 445 points, which included 51 touchdowns and 4,576 yards of total offense for the second-most in school history in each category.

"Over the past 10 years I have witnessed Coach Good's energy, football knowledge, discipline, focus, and grit to help make our teams successful," Maynard commented.  "He is a highly-skilled, inspirational, and creative football coach who has earned the opportunity to lead the Bulldogs forward."

Good brings head-coaching experience from his four-year stint at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota. While overseeing the squad, he led the Pipers to their best finish since the 1997 season while increasing the roster size by 30 players. In addition, Good played an instrumental role in improving the team's overall GPA, revealing his commitment to the Division III student-athlete experience.  He also previously worked at Texas Lutheran University, Illinois College, and Linfield College (OR).

At Redlands, Good retains most of the football staff, with Joey Mariani serving as Defensive Coordinator with additional responsibilities as Associate Head Coach and David Lord taking on the role of Recruiting Coordinator while guiding the Special Teams.  The Bulldogs also welcome back Tommy Garcia (Assistant Offensive Line Coach), Bai Kabba (Defensive Backs), Ric Lucore Jr. (Assistant Director of Operations/Offensive Line), Matt Moore (Wide Receivers), Craig Robbins (Running Backs), and Charles Yaeger IV (Assistant Receivers Coach) as position coaches.

Good looks forward to making the most of the upcoming season.

"Coach Maynard, along with all the coaches, current and former Bulldog football players, have built something special here and we plan to work tirelessly to keep the program moving forward," Good added.

For more than three decades, Maynard established the Bulldog football program's pillars of Mental Toughness and Extreme Desire. Prior to the onset of the pandemic, he completed the 2019 season with an overall record of 206-91-1, which included a 153-38 mark in conference competition for 13 titles.  In his final competitive season, he guided the Bulldogs to their first nine-win showing since 1978 en route to the program's ninth NCAA playoff appearance.

Maynard's reach extended well beyond the X's and O's of the football field through his service-oriented philosophy.  As a result, the Bulldog football team has repeatedly provided many hours of manual labor at Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times® by clearing trails, running irrigation, breaking up cement, building fences, planting trees, and much more.  In addition, his team and staff contributed to the rebuilding process in New Orleans following the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina.
